Christchurch MicroHeli Group - The Helis

Welcome to the Heli Page
(Last Updated on January 26, 2005 22:44 )

On this page you will find pictures and information about some of the helis that you could see flying at the hall on any given flying night.

At present, clicking on the heli's photo will take you to the full-size picture.

In the future I plan to change this so that clicking on the picture will take you to a gallery of pictures of that particular aircraft.

Andrew's FP Hornet

Nearly two years old now, and by far the most flown of the helis listed here,  Andrew's Hornet is still looking and flying as great as ever.  You can read more about this machine on Andrew's "Harry's Hornet" web site.

Base Machine: MS-Composit Hornet

Mods:  JohnKs Tail slider. Walt's one-way bearing mod. Rotor head limiter spring.

Ben's Dragonfly. (Retired)

One of our new arrivals for 2003 was Ben's GWS Dragonfly.  Currently the machine is pretty stock. This machine is also getting a bit of a reputation for consuming other helis' tail motors at an alarming rate :).

Base Machine: GWS Dragonfly

Mods: Ikarus Eco Piccolo tail motor (at the moment :) ).

Deane's other PRO Piccolo

Deane has re-entered the "Two Micro" class with the addition of another PRO Piccolo.
Deane is still working out the configurations across the two machines, but it's looking like one will end up pretty much stock, except for a brushless, and the other will have all the mods and run seperates.

John M's CP Hornet II

Our first new machine for 2004! Picture supplied 14/02/2004.

This is John M's brand spanking new MS Composit Hornet II.  We managed to grab this snap before John has even flown it.  If it flys anywhere near as good as it looks, John will be a happy man.

Base Machine: MS Composit Hornet II

Jon's Bell UH-1 Huey Warbird

And in turn, the Huey didn't stay standard for long!  Soon after completing the Huey below, Jon started hacking it into this VIetnam Era Huey gunship.

Jon's Ikarus Bell UH-1 Huey (Retired)

Well the FUN Piccolo didn't last long.  But it did donate its heart to Jon's new Ikarus Bell UH-1 Huey.
Initially the Huey has been built completely stock (as pictured), but the rumour mill is grinding out hints of major mods and a complete personality change for this mild-mannered civil version of the Huey.  Stay tuned for updates.

Base Machine: Ikarus FUN Piccolo

Mods: None!

Entered Service: 23/02/04
Retired: Mar 2004

Jon's FUN Piccolo (Retired)

The machine that was never meant to be!  Purchased purely as a cheap spare parts supply only, Jon weakened and decided that every Heli Kit has the right to built and flown at least once.  This machine was built completly bone stock (nylon bushes and all) and made it's debut in Feb 2004.  Rumour has it that it will soon be rendered back into a spares supply, but until it does, it is on the flying roster.

Base Machine: Ikarus FUN Piccolo

Mods: None!

Jon's CP Hornet II

Jon finally bit the bullet and purchased another heli.  Deciding to try a different brand for a change, he purchased a new Hornet II.  So far Jon is very happy with his new machine, but that hasn't stopped him slipping a few mods on board!  You can read a review of this machine on the MicroHelis NZ Hornet II review page.

Base Machine: MS Composit Hornet II

Mods: ChrisR swashball, Astro 10 Heli brushless and Phoenix 10 controller.

Entered Service: 15/12/03

Jon's Hybrid AH1-S Cobra (Retired)

Well the plan was to take the Bitsa mechanics, couple it with the AH-1S plans and prints that he'd recently brought from Rob, and create a nice tidy AH-1S.  The reality was that 'gluey hands' got in the way of a good job, and this mess was the result :).

Base Machine: Own Design Hybrid mounted in a Modeltek "Cardboard Cobra" frame.

By the way, if you want to see how good one of these models can look, then go have a look at Modeltek's Card Cobra page.

Mods: Everything!  Still basically the same spec as the OH-58 Kiowa listed below.

Entered Service:Nov 2003  Retired: Dec 2003

Jon's Piccornet Bitsa

The untimely demise of Jon's OH-58A left him in a bit of a bind.  The solution was this typical parts-box hack.  It's basically the Kiowa frame, electronics and mechanics, connected with an over-length c/f tail boom and covered with the original Piccornet Canopy.  Pretty it isn't, but functional it is....

Base Machine: Own Design Hybrid

Mods: Everything!  See the OH-58 entry below for major details..

Entered Service: Oct 2003

Jon's Hybrid OH-58A Kiowa (Retired)

It's hard to believe that this started as a FP Piccolo 18 months ago. This machine has been hacked, modded and re-designed to the the point that the only genuine, un-modified Ikarus part on it is the tail rotor assembly.

Base Machine: Own Design Hybrid

Mods: Everything!  See the OH-58A page at Jon's EHelis for full specifications and more photos

Entered Service: 25/06/2003  Retired: 22/10/2003  The Kiowa was retired due to massive structural damage incurred from a glitch induced crash.

Keith's Kyosho Hughes 300

This is Keith's Kyoshso Hughes 300.  As I haven't actually seen this machine yet, the details are pretty sparse.  By all accounts all that have seen it have been impressed.  I'll supply some more detail once I they come to hand.

Mike's CP Hornet

This is Mike's CP Hornet.  Not completed yet as he want's to get through the learning-to-fly stage before putting a nice finish on that pristine canopy :).  The crossed sticks arrangement with balls on the end attached to the undercarriage is standard training gear.  It enables the novice pilot to learn to hover without risking an expensive tip-over.

Base Machine: MS-Composit CP Hornet

Mods: Training Gear
